About our Speakers

Mel Jones OAM

Mel’s playing days included two successful World Cup and Ashes campaigns with Australia, 20 years of state cricket and she is still connected where possible to her local club side Essendon Maribyrnong Park in Victoria.

A right-handed batter and occasional right-arm medium pace bowler, Mel was the 134th woman to play Test Cricket for Australia. She also represented her country in 61 One Day Internationals, as well as 122 appearances for the Victorian Spirit in the WNCL.

A qualified Physical Education teacher, Mel worked in cricket development and sports management before moving fulltime into broadcast and commentary roles in TV and radio across Australian and International cricket in 2017.  In 2019 Jones received one of Australia’s highest honours, the Medal of the Order of Australia, for services to cricket and the community.

Matthew Mott

Matt played a combined 66 first class games for Queensland & Victoria in a domestic career spanning 10 years. A crafty left-handed top order batsman, Matt finished his first-class career with over 3700 runs with 7 centuries next to his name.

Since retiring, Matt has had a hugely successful career as a coach. Beginning as an assistant for the Australian U19 Team, Matt then became head coach of the NSW Blues and lead them to the Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup title. He also had a very successful stint coaching Glamorgan over England & an assistant role with Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. This was all before he began his very successful run as the Australian Women’s Team Coach in 2015 – a position which he still holds to this day.

Matt has driven a program & culture within the Australian Women’s Team that has made them one of the most successful sporting teams in Australian history. Multiple Ashes wins, One Day & T20 World Cups & the number ODI & T20 ranked side in the world, it is not hard to see why. Their success has also driven more interest in the women’s game with more young girls now picking up a bat that ever before. This was clear when back in March, the Australian Women’s Team won the T20 World Cup on home soil in front of 87,000 fans at the MCG – a record for the highest attended women’s sporting event in Australian history.

Justin Langer

As a player, Justin is widely regarding as one of the greatest opening batsmen Australia has ever seen. Justin played 105 test matches scoring 7,696 runs including 23 test centuries. He also had a distinguished state career representing his state of Western Australia over a 17-year period & holds the title of the greatest Sheffield Shield run scorer of all time for his beloved state.

Since retiring, JL has held several assistant roles within the Australian Mean’s Cricket Team, was the head coach of Western Australia & Perth Scorchers before becoming Head Coach of the Australian Men’s Cricket Team, as position he has held since 2018. During this period, he has lead the team to some great success on the field with retaining the Ashes over in England, regaining the number 1 Test ranking & becoming the number 1 ranked T20 nation for the first time. Off the field, he has set about creating a culture that is all about making Australian’s proud.

Outside of cricket JL is a current board member of the West Coast Eagles Football Club & a father of 4.
